Augmentin Allergy!
I could not believe what I saw when I got you unchanged for a bath on Thursday, a week after you surgery. What was going on!? I soon learn by way of Gigi, aunty, Granny in South Africa and the internet that you were having a reaction to the Antibiotic prescribed to you after your procedure. Granny in South Africa is allergic to Penicillin and aunty Ang gets a black tongue, so suffice to say, its in our family.
Augmentin is a penicillin antibiotic.
Augmentin contains a combination of amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium. Amoxicillin is an antibiotic in a group of drugs called penicillins. Amoxicillin fights bacteria in the body.
Clavulanate potassium is a form of clavulanic acid. It is used to overcome resistance in bacteria that secrete beta-lactamase, thereby counteracting possible bacterial resistance to the amoxicillin.
We immediately stopped the antibiotic. We thought if its a side effect it will fade quickly and we can go about our weekend as planned. Sadly you did not just suffer a side effect. You are actually allergic. The rash turned into hives and began to itch. We quickly gave you a light covering of Benedryl ointment to relive your scratching as you were making yourself bleed! This morning when you woke up the red welts have gone but the bumps are still working their way through your skin. I applied more Benedryl and have been giving you more probiotics that I usually do. Hopefully by tomorrow you will be good as new.
